Jack Nelson Swim School’s "Access To Success Scholarship" Provides FREE Swimming and Water Safety Instruction
Fort Lauderdale, FL – July 7, 2006

Enough is Enough! Far too many of our children’s lives have been stolen by a menacing, yet, preventable killer. This child killer does not hide. With over 300 miles of navigable waterways, 24 miles of beachfront and over half a million pools in Broward County our children and families are exposed to this potential, yet preventable killer everyday.

"Drowning is the 4th leading cause of accidental death in the United States, claiming 4,000 lives annually. Approximately one-third are children under the age of 14." (American Institute for Preventive Medicine) For the past six years drowning has been the leading cause of death for children between 1-4 years of age in Florida.

According to the most recent report on drowning by the Florida Department of Health, "Deaths from drowning for children less than age five in Florida are more than double the national average and are higher than any other state in the nation." We cannot deny the threat of drowning in our community! The same report by the Florida Department of Health reveals that Broward County ranks first among the number of toddler drowning deaths in Florida, followed by Miami-Dade.

Enough is Enough! The Jack Nelson Swim School is committed to saving our children from being another heart-wrenching statistic. JNSS and the City of Fort Lauderdale have been working together to eliminate the threat of drowning. The strongest defense is education! JNSS has established the "Access to Success Scholarship," in an effort to make swimming more accessible to more children in our community.

The "Access to Success Scholarship" is designed to provide Broward County families with accessible and affordable swimming and water safety instruction. The Jack Nelson Swim School will provide scholarship participants with FREE swimming lessons at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex. The "Access to Success Scholarship" is available to those families that are eligible for the Broward County Public Schools Free Lunch Program. There are a limited amount of scholarships offered yearly; contact the Jack Nelson Swim School to become a part of accessing success in the water.

The Jack Nelson Swim School is dedicated to protecting South Florida’s families, and continuing a swimming tradition of teaching with care. JNSS was founded by U.S. Olympic Coach Jack Nelson, the only person in the history of USA Swimming who has been both an Olympic swimmer and an Olympic Head coach. The JNSS program has been teaching children and adults how to be safer swimmers and developing successful competitive swimmers for over fifty years. The Jack Nelson Swim School offers a year round swimming program for all ages and abilities. JNSS offers private one-on-one instruction and various group classes for children and adults designed to create safer, smarter and stronger swimmers.
